DIY: Homemade Laundry Detergent, Dishwasher Detergent, and More!
Have you ever made your own laundry detergent? Dishwasher detergent? I always thought it would be hard, but these tutorials make it look SO easy to make your own cleaners!
Homemade Laundry Detergent – Powder
Homemade Laundry Detergent – Liquid
Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner (I’ve made this and LOVE it!)
Homemade Carpet Cleaner for Carpet Cleaning Machines
I haven’t figured up whether or not it’s cheaper to make your own or not yet, especially for couponers who pay just pennies for these items. I do love the fact that you don’t have to worry about toxins when you make your own though!

I got a recipe for the laundry soap from The Duggars Family website. It’s on their website, not TLC’s. It gives the yields for a top load and a front load and unless you get it for free it would defiitely be cheaper. It does require more of an initial cost, but it lasts a long time. They also have a way to save on fabric softener. I was able to find all the ingredients at Wal-Mart and Kroger.

@Melinda Elam, I love the Duggars! I remember their laundry soap episode too!

I’ve been making my own laundry soap for about a year and I love it! My friend started making it when her new baby’s skin was so sensitive, even Dreft bothered him! But not the homemade soap 🙂 I’ve been couponing for a couple of years, and I don’t have it all broken down, but I think usually the homemade soap is still cheaper. I still get laundry soap at the store if it’s free or super-cheap, but it kind of depends….the only place I’ve found the Fels Naptha soap by me is at Ace Hardware and it’s about $3.25, but when I visit my mom I can get a bar of Zote at the grocery store for $0.89. Also, I use only a little or no softener with it, so it saves me there too. I’m definitely going to try some of these other recipes!

@Jami, Glad to hear you’ve had a good experience with it! I have yet to find the little bars of soap, but I’m sure I’m just not looking in the right place!

@Stephanie,
I find the Fels Naptha soap at a Kroger here in east Texas, it’s on the top shelf toward the back of the store, in between bigger containers. I had a hard time finding it for a while. After you purchase the ingredients, it’s only about $2 per batch, which is 10 gallons of detergent. Been using it about 6 months, love it!

@Mindy, Wow! $2 for 10 gallons!! I will definitely look for the soap next time I’m at Kroger! Thanks!
Mindy
@Mindy, I forgot to say it was in the laundry aisle in Kroger.

I’ve been making most of my cleaning products for years, because I don’t want to use toxic chemicals, and can’t stand the smell of most commercial products. I made some for Christmas presents 2 years ago, and it was fun, cheap, & well received! Here’s that post, along with recipes:

@Resweater, What a great idea to give it as a gift!
