Eggs In A Nest Recipe
“Eggs in a Nest” is currently my favorite breakfast food. The thought of it will get me out of bed in the morning. I’m not much of a breakfast person, so that’s saying something!
Plus, my kids love it and I can make fun shapes in the bread for them using cookie cutters. They get a kick out of it!
“Eggs in a Nest” goes by several other names like “Eggs in a Basket” and “Frog in a Pond”, so you may have heard of it by another name.
It’s so simple to make, so this really isn’t much of a recipe, but I’ve been dying to share my favorite breakfast with you all!
Eggs in a Nest
Ingredients
- 1 Egg
- 1 Slice of Sourdough Bread
- 1 TBSP of Butter (not margarine), divided
Directions
1. Cut out a shape in the center of the bread. You can use fun cookie cutter shapes like hearts or stars, or you can improvise and use a cup or glass. Do not discard the cut out bread – it will make for a delicious piece of buttery toast!
2. Heat 1/2 TBSP butter in a skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add both pieces of bread.
3. Crack your egg right into the hole in the bread. Cook until the egg white is solid.
4. Lift the egg and bread with your spatula and add the other 1/2 TBSP of butter to the skillet. Flip the bread to cook the other side of the egg. Be very careful not to break the yolk. Flip the circle of toast as well.
5. Cook the egg over easy – or to your preference. This side will cook faster than the first side, so watch it carefully.
6. Serve immediately.
I like to serve with a side of sausage and fruit!

My kids call them ” Eggs in a Frame”. They got the recipe from a kids cookbook and it is their FAVORITE breakfast food! I love the idea of scrambling the egg first so it can be eaten on the go. I am going to try it tomorrow!
Stephanie
My kids have really grown to love this breakfast too – though they like their egg runny so they can dip the toast in it, lol.
Christine
Love it!! Try it with potato bread, its to die for!! At least for me!:)
Stephanie
Oh, I will have to try that!
Rae

My grandmother made egg in the nest for me all the time. She would always cut it up for me too – even as I got older. Great memories!
Stephanie
Aw, I love memories like that!

Loooove these! We always called them a “toe in the hole” but maybe we just got it mixed up w/ “toad” somewhere along the line. I also met someone who called it a “Kramer.” I thought that was odd, but to each their own!
Stephanie
LOL!! Toe in a hole and Kramer – two new names for it!
Heather
Ive always called it Toad in a Hole……….so good in the mornings
Stephanie
That’s so funny. That seems to be a common name for it, but I had never heard of it!

Ha! My husband saw these made in the movie Ultraviolet and had to try them. Huge hit! Kids love to cut up the bread in fun shapes! Never had them as a kid, I’m so jealous…must make up for that now! 🙂
Stephanie
I never had them as a kid either, so I’m also making up for lost time, lol. At first we just did circle cutouts but now it’s fun to use cookie cutters to make fun shapes.

We called these “Egyptian Eye” when I was growing up. I think that was the name listed in the kids cookbook we had. I’ve always wondered what Toad in the Hole was – guess I’ve been eating it all along and never knew! lol
Thanks for sharing, I’d almost forgotten how good those were!
Stephanie
Egyptian Eye, Toad in a Hole, Frog in a Pond – I am loving all these different names for this food!

We called these Toad In The Hole and I made it for my son when he was in high school. I whisked the egg and poured it in the hole. That way he could wrap it in a napkin and eat it as he drove to school! He has a daughter now and can’t wait until she is big enough so I can make these for her.
Stephanie
What a great idea! I never thought of trying to make it an on-the-go meal!
Stephanie
That is something I learned how to make when I was a child learning to cook over 30 years ago. I make it for my kids and they enjoy it.
Stephanie
I can’t wait to teach my kids how to cook it!

My Mom made this for me as a kid. She called it Egg in the Middle. Agree the cutout is so good. We used it for dipping in the yolk.
Stephanie
My kids love dipping theirs in the yolk too!

Love that little nibble of fried bread you get from the cut-out… yum… midnight snack anyone?
Stephanie
Yes, I love that part!!
Chrystal
YUM! I’ve never tried it, but it looks delish 🙂 I’ve got no sourdough, but white bread will have to do for now.
Stephanie
Yes, I should have said any bread will work. Sourdough seems to taste the best to me though, so I always use that.

We always ate these growing up! I loved them! Now I make them for my two girls! My favorite part was always to save the cut out bread to eat last!
Stephanie
The bread cut out is my favorite part too! I try to save it for last but I almost always cave in and eat it about midway through my egg, lol.
Krysta
We call these Popeyes! I have been eating them since I was a kid, and now I make them for my sons and husband, who had never had one before he married me 🙂
Stephanie
Popeyes – I love it! I never had these as a kid either – I’m definitely making up for lost time though because I’m eating them almost daily!

random, but sort of associated…
we had eggs on smashed lentils for dinner the other night. it was a big hit. the recipe said to bake the eggs in the lentils (in ramekins)…. but i had a hard time monitoring the yolks that way… by the time the white had set, the yolk was firm. so i found it easier to cook the eggs in a little non-stick pan & set em atop a mound of moroccan spiced smashed lentils.
this is the recipe, but i used moroccan spices & cooked the eggs separately after the first failed attempt 😉

Yum! I would have never thought to use eggs and lentils in the same recipe! I might have to try that.
Rae
Toad in Hole! lol Not my thing but my kids love it
Stephanie
LOL! I don’t think I’d heard of that name yet!
