When school is out of session, how can you keep your kids busy? Parking them in front of the TV may seem like the simple option, but even the best binge-watching session gets old. With school breaks looming on the horizon, here are some affordable winter break activities you and your family can enjoy together!
If you live in a cold climate, the change of seasons can bring a wealth of affordable activity options. Once there is snow on the ground, you and your children might make snow angels, build a snowman, or construct an igloo. If your city has an outdoor ice rink or sledding hill, these activities are also usually either low-priced or free. However, buying/renting ice skates and/or a sled could get pricey.
Everyone in your family has unique skills and knowledge. Sharing that knowledge provides a valuable learning experience for everyone. Parents might teach their children simple recipes, while kids can teach their parents things they learned in school recently. After all, what adult doesn’t need a thorough refresher in long division?
During the holidays, families may get so wrapped up in giving and receiving that they forget those who are less fortunate. Volunteering as a family during fall or winter break can help teach kids to be grateful for what they have while being considerate of those in need.
Board games are a fun indoor activity you can enjoy in your pajamas on those cold days when you just don’t feel like getting dressed. Games often get the whole family talking and laughing, so they are a great bonding activity. If you run out of games to play, you might even consider making your own based on your family’s interests.
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a camping trip! Setting up a tent or makeshift fort in your house can be fun and memorable. Once your camp is set up, you can even enjoy many of your favorite camp activities, like telling stories, singing, or reading.
