Daily Frugal Tip: Buy Meat In Bulk

Reader Adrienne sent in the following great frugal tip:

“When I feel like I don’t have time to coupon, I still save money by buying meat in bulk, especially ground beef. I buy the 10 or 20 lb tubes and bring them home. My husband slices them into 1-lb sections and we put them in freezer bags and store them. Then I always have an easy go-to for “beefing” up a recipe. If I want to thaw it and brown it at the same time, but don’t have time to slave away over the stove, I will put 1 lb in my small crockpot and turn it on low. Presto! A couple of hours later, it’s ready to be drained and added to salads, pastas, or whatever we need to make a meal! And it seems like I have so much meat I don’t have to go to the store nearly as often!”

This one saves money AND time! You could also go meatless more often to save money.

Thanks, Adrienne!

  • I buy bone in chicken breats (usually for .89/pound) and put about 20 pounds in a roaster before I go to bed. When I get up the chicken is ready to be shredded and frozen. I use chicken for all kinds of dishes. Great to have on hand when you need to send a dish to a friend.

    • What do you set the roaster on? I am not real familiar with the roaster and have only used it once for a brisket.

  • I love to buy boneless skinless chicken breast when it is on sale for $1.69 a pound. Then I trim any excess fat, and put it all in my crockpot. After it has cooked, I shred it and freeze it in smaller packages (sandwich bag size). Then I can pull one out, pop it in the microwave for one minute and add it to recipes for a quick dinner. We have chicken spaghetti, chicken tacos, fajitas, chicken casseroles, etc. It makes for a very easy dinner when I'm short on time.
