If you live in a cold climate, winter can seem impossibly long. As weeks turn into months, you might run out of fun, free weekend activities to fill your time. But don’t worry! There are still plenty of ways to enjoy your weekend that you might not have tried yet. These eight ideas can be fun for the whole family!
If there’s snow and the ground, you can go out and play! Snow offers an abundance of fun, free weekend activities that are not possible during warmer weather. As long as you have warm clothes, you can build a snowman, make an igloo, make snow angels, and have a snowball fight without spending a dime. If you have some additional gear, you might also be able to go sledding, go snowshoeing, go cross-country skiing, or go ice skating for free.
With the right gear, you can camp outside during the winter. However, for most people, the idea of spending the night in the frigid cold may seem a little daunting. If you want a more comfortable winter camping experience, why not camp inside? You can set up a small tent in your living room and camp out in your sleeping bags.
Don’t have a tent? No problem! You could make a pillow fort for a fun and memorable touch.
And don’t forget to work in some of your favorite camping activities, like telling stories, singing, or eating s’mores. While it requires some supplies, this Simple Stovetop S’mores Dip recipe from Cook. Craft. Love. can take your indoor camping adventure to the next level.
Sure, you may have had a few movie nights (or a few dozen), but have you had a movie marathon? If you already have DVDs or a streaming subscription, a movie marathon can be completely free. To make it more fun, you might select a theme. For instance, you could watch popular Disney movies, family-friendly Oscar winners, classic adventure flicks, or all the movies in a series, like “Star Wars” or “Harry Potter.”
If you’re prepared to put a little money into the event, you could also consider having movie snacks or putting together themed treats to match the theme of the marathon.
Reading is a fun activity all year, but curling up under a blanket with a good book has undeniable appeal. Families might go to the library together and each pick out a book they’ll read during the weekend. Once everyone has completed their book, you might each share what you liked best about the book you read.
Kids may enjoy playing dress-up, but adults can get in on the act, too! You can pair different garments together to see how they look, try on a loved one’s clothes, or even see if you can put together fun costumes with items you already own. Playing dress-up can also help you clean out your closet since you may find items you forgot you owned.
What if we told you that you could learn a skill this weekend and use it for the rest of your life? Guess what? You can! Whether it’s how to hang drywall, how to bake bread, or how to play a few chords on the guitar, your friends and family may have skills they would gladly teach you for free.
If you’re not comfortable asking for help, don’t worry! There are plenty of other ways to learn. Look for free instructional videos on YouTube or free courses on edX to expand your mind without shrinking your wallet.
Doing karaoke can be such a fun activity for groups. While a karaoke machine may be helpful, it isn’t essential. You can find a lot of free karaoke videos on YouTube. Just search your favorite song names and “karaoke” to see what’s out there.
Need something to do? Check your trash! If you have trash items that are still sanitary, you might try to transform it rather than throwing it out. You might consider redoing old furniture, repurposing product packing, or coming up with an innovative art project. If the materials would otherwise end up in a landfill, it’s no loss if your project doesn’t turn out how you’d hoped. Plus, if you transform trash with your children, it might encourage them to look at garbage differently.
