Target Updated Coupon Policy
Target has updated their coupon policy again. There are a couple of important changes so I wanted to share them with you.
Target does not accept internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirements.
This is unfortunate but completely understandable. I very rarely bother printing “free” coupons because very few stores will accept them.
Buy One Get One Free Coupons (BOGO):
1. BOGO coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free). Unless stated otherwise on the coupon, the use of one Buy One Get One Free coupon requires that two of the valid items are presented at checkout of which one item will be charged to the guest and the 2nd item will be discounted by its full retail price.
2. A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.
- If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon maybe used on the first item.
- If a Manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.
I have never heard of a store that will accept two BOGO coupons on the same two items, so I’m a little surprised that this is mentioned. It is generally known that you cannot combine two BOGO coupons.
I am glad to see them clear up whether or not you can use a 2nd coupon toward the item you’re paying for when using a BOGO coupon. I know this is a highly debated topic and is usually a matter of conscience, however when it is clearly outlined in the store policy then you must adhere to the store’s rules.
This also means you can no longer use coupons on items that you get for “free” with coupons. If you have a BOGO Target coupon then you can use a manufacturer coupon on the non-free item but not on the free item. If you have a BOGO Manufacturer’s coupon then you can use a Target coupon on the non-free item but not on the free item.
You can see the full list of guidelines here: Target Coupon Policy.
I highly recommend you print and carry a copy of Target’s Coupon Policy with you when you shop.

Where does it state in the policy that you can not use a coupon for the free item when purchasing BOGO free items..

This is taken from the Target coupon policy on their site: “Buy One Get One Free Coupons (BOGO):
•BOGO coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free). Unless stated otherwise on the coupon, the use of one Buy One Get One Free coupon requires that two of the valid items are presented at checkout of which one item will be charged to the guest and the 2nd item will be discounted by its full retail price.
•A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.
•If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon may be used on the first item.
•If a Manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.”
Hope this helps! 🙂 Good luck.

So, does this mean that if the coupon exceed the price of the item they wont apply that overage to the rest of the transaction?????
Meagan
Right. Target does not allow overage.

Are you familiar with the new coupon policy for Target? Now you can use a target coupon, a manufactures coupon, AND a cartwheel. Do you know what a carwheel is and how to use it? Thanks!
Krista
They may make the BOGO policy clear because of Albertson’s policy:
“Albertsons offers of Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) promotions in their weekly advertisement can be combined with Buy One, Get One Free manufacturer coupons to result in BOTH items being Free.”

So, directly after watching my first episode of extremes couponing, I scoured the internet for tips on how to get my foot into the door of this money saving business. Of course, I never expected to to become like the couponers on TV, but as a working girlfriend living with a part time boyfriend saving up for school, I wanted to try it out and see if it was worth it.
Your website was the first I came across, and by far the most helpful. I wrote down tips, and started studying the craft of couponing ha.
I just wanted to say that two days ago was my first couponing trip and the first time I’ve ever used any sort of coupon. (Not even my mother used coupons.) I am so proud to say that with your sites help, I was able to save 25% on an almost $50 bill. And that was my first time! I was so proud and amazed that I can do this, and best of all, I find it super fun. My boyfriend calls it my part time hobby since it’s like it pays. 🙂
Thank you again for all the tips! Happy clipping! 🙂
Stephanie
That’s so great! It really can be like a part-time job!

I went into target today and tried to use my $1 off Q on a pack of pens that was .99 cents but the manager told me that their policy didn’t allow me to use a coupon that has a greater value than the product. Can they do that? and if I show them their policy so they see that it doesn’t say that do you think they’ll allow me to use the coupon?
Stephanie
Here is the link to the policy: http://www.target.com/HelpContent?help=/sites/html/TargetOnline/help/promotions_sweepstakes_and_discounts/target_coupon_policy/target_coupon_policy.html (for some reason the link keeps changing! ugh)
It specifically says: “Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied”. So, they should have accepted your coupon and reduced the value to $0.99.

What about manufactorer’s coupons on travel size items. My store gave me a hard time when I tried to purchas travel Tide packets with a P&G coupon. The coupon said nothing about excluding travel size and their manager said that it was known that manufactorer’s could not be used on travel size items. I told him it was well known that you could if the coupon did not exclude. He said it was a store policy but I do not see that here, do you know?
Stephanie
It is not store policy. It’s helpful to show them a coupon that excludes trial size so they can see that some exclude and some don’t.

I just went to Target in Hemet California and they did not let me use one Target coupon and one Manufacturer coupon on one item. The manager at the time told me that I was only allowed to use one coupon per item. I stated that their policy stated different (which was on the their Target coupon). She stated that every store is different. Crazy Crazy Crazy!!! The items would not have been for free anyways. I would have had to pay money out of my pocket. What is going on with them? I hate shopping at Target. Corporate will definitely hear from me.

I recently made a trip up to target for the magic scotch tape that is on sale for 50cents and I had a target internet coupon for 50 cents off magic scotch tape which would make it free. I was told by the cashier that I could not use the coupon because it would make the item free. Is that the correct policy because I still believe I should have been able to use it.
Janice
HI there,
I was wondering how often does Target offer new coupons on their website?
Thanks!
Denise
Just to let all of us know, I ran into the same problems with walmart just this afternoon, I think that they are catching on to all of the new coupon rage since the tv show and they are NOT going to let us have anything for a bargain. Let’s not get discouraged, keep on trucking, there is always other stores who want your business everyone.
Happy couponing

My walgreens will let you use a b1g1 free coupon and if walgreens has it in the ad b1g1 free then you will get 2 free
Joe
Thank you for this timely post! I am new to couponing and made my first coupon-filled trip to Target just this afternoon. One of the deals I was going for was this:
Dannon Danimals Smoothie, 6 pk $2.69 (Reg. Price)
– $1/1 Danimals Yogurt Smoothie 6-pk. Target Printable Coupon AND
– $1/1 Dannon Danimals Coupon (6/5 SS)
= 69¢
When I presented the cashier with both coupons, she said “You can’t use two coupons on the same item.” I told her “One is a manufacturer’s coupon, the other is a Target printable coupon.” She said it didn’t matter. The store was busy and there were people behind me (and I was embarrassed and disappointed enough), so I didn’t ask for a manager. After reading these coupon policies, I will be going back to speak to a manager to let them know that their cashiers need a quick refresher. And in the future, I’m going to try to shop close to the store closing to avoid the pressure of lines (which is when I shop for groceries…works great).

@Joe,
I went to target store today to get the Nivea Men bodywash, I had $2 manufacturer coupon and $1 Target store coupon… When I got to the cashier, he said i can’t combine the MFG coupon and target coupon coz he said thats their new policy… So i ended up paying 2.06 for that body wash… This is sucks!!! Im planning to return the body wash next time, Im not going to shop there anymore and Im gonna cancel my redcard…… I’d rather shop at CVS….
Phee
@Raquel, I just did the same thing Saturday with no problem and paid 4 cents for it.
Tess
@Joe the manufacturer coupon has absolutely nothing to do with the target coupon, next time stand firm and ask for a manager, target gets their money back from the manufacture, the cashier didnt know what they were talking about. Anytime you have a store coupon its from the store and has nothing to do with the manufactures coupon. Thats what this coupon savings is all about.
When i shop warehouse stores where multiple items are packaged together i use a coupon for each item, ie 2pk of Listerine i use two manufactures coupons and if the warehouse has one i can use it as well.
*Remember the stores will be reimbursed from the manufacture for taking the manufacturer’s coupon
