How to double coupons
Couponing Basics

What Does “Doubling Coupons” Mean?

Doubling and tripling coupons is one of the most confusing aspects of couponing when you’re starting out.  So, I am going to explain exactly how to double and triple coupons!

Double or triple coupons is a promotion offered by a store in an effort to get you to shop there. Doubling coupons is when the store will take your coupon and match the value of it up to a certain amount.  The amount will vary by store, but I will use $1 as an example. You bring in your $1 coupon to use and they will give you $2 off your purchase instead of just $1. Pretty good deal, eh?

The coupon doubling happens automatically at the register, however you may need to use your loyalty/rewards card to take advantage of the promotion (make sure to scan your card before any coupons or they may not double).  After you scan the $1 coupon, you will see another deduction right under it for another $1 off.

Most stores will only double a certain number of each of the same coupon. My Kroger store will only double three “like” coupons.  So, if you were to buy four boxes of Cheerios and use four 50¢/1 Cheerios coupons, only the first three would double. They will still accept the fourth coupon, but it will not double. You could, however, buy six boxes of Cheerios and use three 50¢/1 coupons and three 45¢/1 coupons and they would all double because they are different.

Stores will only double up to a certain amount. The amounts are usually 50¢, 99¢, or $1.  That means, if your store doubles up to 99¢ and you use a $1 coupon, your $1 coupon will not double.  So, in this situation, a 75¢ coupon would actually be worth more than a $1 coupon!

Some coupons state “do not double” on them. Manufacturers sometimes print this on their coupons to financially protect themselves.  They will reimburse the store for the amount of the coupon plus an 8¢ handling fee. However, some stores may get confused and think that the manufacturers should reimburse them for the full amount plus the doubled amount. This is not the case though. The manufacturer only reimburses for the amount on the coupon. The store is fully responsible for the doubled amount. Even though the store is paying for the doubled amount out of their own pockets, doubling coupons attracts a great deal of shoppers which usually more than makes up for any potential losses for the store.

Even though some coupons say “do not double”, most will still automatically double at the register. If you look at the coupon bar code you can tell if it will or will not double. If the coupon bar code starts with a “5” it will double automatically. If it starts with a “9” it will NOT double automatically. Even if it starts with a “5”, the cashier may still override the coupon to make it not double.

Some stores only double on certain days. All the stores in my area will double and triple coupons everyday. There are some stores though that will only double on certain days of the week or month.

Do your research! Check your store’s weekly sales flier, go online to their website website or even call directly to ask about their double/triple coupon rules and promotions.

See, doubling coupons isn’t hard at all!

  4. I’m new to this. I just watched Extreme Couponing show..is it true that a $500 bill can be reduced to like $8 bucks by using coupons. Seems so easy on the show. Also, if I have a .50 cent coupon for heinze ketchup, can 1 only apply that to 1 ketchup? What if I have 4 coupons for heinze ketchup? Can I apply 4 coupons, if I have 4 ketchups?

  6. So I have a Walgreen’s ad that states:
B1G1 50% off for Band Aid Brand band aids
I have 5 coupons that read:
Save $2 on any 3 Band-Aid Brand band aids
Limit one coupon per person, no more than 4 coupons (of any kind) for the same product in the same transaction.

How could I make this coupon work best for me?

    Reply

    • If it says “Limit one coupon per person” then you can only use one at a time. You could buy 4 Band Aids and use the one coupon – that would be two at full price, two at half price, and then an additional $2 off with the coupon.

  7. So, I live in Canada. I was wondering does doubling or tripling coupons only apply in the U.S.? And for example if I was buying some mouthwash for $5 and I had two $1 coupons for that product, would I be able to use both coupons to purchase the product and get $2 off.? because all coupons say “only one coupon per purchase”

  8. You mention bar codes starting with 5 or 9. All of my coupons (manufacturer, store, and online) start with zeros. So will they or won’t they double? Additionally, do I need to ask the cashier to double my coupons?

    Reply

    • Coupon barcodes recently changed, but your coupons should double unless there is some wording on there that indicates they will not (store coupons never double). You don’t need to ask the cashier to double, they will double automatically.

  9. Love all your posts! They’ve been very helpful. After several successful trips to my local ShopRite in CT (with every coupon doubling), I decided to finally ask about their policy. A bit backwards, I know. I was told that only 4 coupons double per day. They double coupons up to 99 cents every day. However, at the register, all 13 of my coupons doubled. The store manager and/or the cashiers often override coupons that don’t scan without question. I’m so very lucky to have pleasant people check me out so far.

I really just want to get the hang of everything and be able to go out and just save money while getting things that my family needs. I live in North Carolina and don’t really know of any other people who coupon. I would like to link up with a few folks and learn all that I can. If there is anyone in Charlotte area that coupons please let me know!

  12. Hi, I can’t find a straight answer anywhere… what happens when it’s a coupon that says “$2 off of a purchase of 4” for example? Will this double, since it’s really $.50 off per item? Or it WON’T double because the face value of the coupon is higher than $.99 (the limit where I live)?
    Thanks

    Reply

    • If your store only doubles coupons valued at 99¢ or less, then the $2/4 coupon will not double. The store doubles the face value of the coupon only.

I shop at Meijer and they never seem to double my coupons do I have to ask them to doube them for me? Or use more of 1 of the same coupon? Always see people that there total is $200 and always bring it down to $50? Any tips I can have would be awesome! Thanks everyone!

    • At store with double coupon policies, the coupon should automatically double in value when scanned. You need to check with your store’s manager or employee to find out the coupon doubling policy. Some stores double, some double up to a certain value, and some do not double at all. Good luck!

  26. Coupons CAN help you save money on the things that you NORMALLY use. DON’T be influenced by coupons one things that you normally would not buy. Otherwise you will spend more and defeat your purpose of using the coupons in the first place. Occasinally I will use a coupon to try a new product, but I do this very seldom. DON’T buy a product just because you have a coupon for it.

  27. I have used coupons for quite some time. Most of the stores here will dlb everyday up to $I.00. Meaning .50=1.00, .75=1.00, .95=1.00,etc. Occasionally they will run a special and dbl $1.00 coupons, but those specials are few and far between these days and I’m afraid the Extreme couponing may have put an end to those specials altogether. Through my use of coupons I can typically cut my total bill by 1/3-1/2. my last trip to the store my total bill was $259 and change. After the coupons were applied my cost was $139 and change. Remember to check store brands against the name brand w/coupon(Same sizes) for the better bargain. A larger size of a brand name w/coupon may not be the better bargain than the store brand that may be 1-3 oz. smaller.

    • It depends on what your coupons will double up to. For instance, your store might only double coupons that are $0.50 and under. But, they will allow anything over $0.50 to get bonus savings up to $1. Not all stores do that, but it might be the case with your store.

If so I think most of their stores will double coupons, however they only dlb to a certain amount. If you find a store near you call to find out thier coupon limits.

My question is..what would I be paying because freds deal is purchase three to get them for 10.00 but the coupon says I can double when I be any 2. That leaves one. I have four coupons though so if I purchase 9 12 packs, that takes care of 2 left over, right? Then I would just be paying for the one leftover right? Complicated!! plz help.

    • Okay, I admit I am confused, lol. I don’t understand how you have “4 double coupons” for coke. If your coupons are for $1 off and your store only doubles up to $0.70, then your coupons will not double. Here is what I think you would pay (based on my understanding of this):

      (3) Coke 12 pks 3/$10 (depending on the promotion, you may not have to actually buy 3, but I don’t know what the ad says, so I’ll be safe and say buy 3)
      – (3) $1/1 Coke coupons
      = 3/$7

    • I’m in central California. I’m unaware of ANY stores doubling in my area. (They used to years ago but stopped. There was one in town as of last year, but its prices were higher and it didn’t make sense for my overall shopping trip, especially when you considered gas prices, and I think they have now ceased.) Target will not double, but you can stack a Target coupon with a manufacturer’s coupon. Most stores here strictly enforce coupon limits also. Usually no more than 4 like coupons, but one local grocery store’s coupon policy is never more than 2 alike. I think they have gotten completely burned out with the couponers who are rude, clear shelves, challenge managers in the angry voice, back up lines, etc. I have also noticed cashiers are nastier and like the coupon police, probably because of couponers that try to get away with something they are not legitimately being offered. I try really hard to police my own coupons and put on my extra grace attitude if I’m making a coupon trip!

If not you can just call your local stores and find out who doubles and triples and who doesn’t. Some also only do it on certain days of the week or month. On those day arrive EARLY because chances are you won’t be the only one trying to stock up on those few and far between days!

I don’t compare my coupon savings to what I would be saving if I had to purchase the ‘regular’ stuff without coupons, I compare it to my generic shopping. The savings don’t seem to be too much. Reply

    • @JenM, No, using a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon on the same item is stacking. Doubling is when your $0.50 manufacturer’s coupon gives you a $1 discount. The store coupon may or may not double depending on the bar code (starts w/ a 5 then it will double, starts with a 9 or 0 then it won’t double).

    • @Amanda, No, you can only use ONE coupon per item. If you have two of the same coupons, you can use both as long as you purchase two items (if the coupons are for $1/2 then you would need to buy 2 items per coupon).

As long as they are different coupons for the same product you can use multiples.

For example Similac formula- costs 7.99 for the concentrated bottle
Similac offers $5 or $3 “check” coupons.
They also had a 3/$10 coupon
When you purchase a larger formula they come with coupons inside for $2/$5 off.

I have used all three coupons and specifically asked because I did not want to cheat the system. I was told by store manager at HEB as long as they were different, it was fine.

          • @Sara, Really and your proud of that?!? Girl we’re all trying to save $ but it’s when people like YOU do things like THAT then it ruins it for the rest of us who re being honest 🙁

          • Check each store’s coupon policy – I know where I shop a lot, there is a limit of one coupon per product purchased. So even if I had two coupons, let’s say $2 off 2, and the other was .45 off 1 of the same product, technically I could not use those on two pieces of merchandise. (This applies to BOGOs as well.) Additionally, more and more coupons have something like “only one coupon per product purchased” on them. Some registers even know which coupons apply to which products and won’t allow more than one to be applied to a product, at least not without an override.

However, many places issue their own *store* coupons, and you can stack one of these with a manufacturer’s coupon for the same item. (I know this works at Target for sure.) So if I had a manufacturer’s coupon for $1.50 off 1 Pantene shampoo and a 1 off Pantene shampoo Target coupon, I could use them on the same product. (To me, stacking coupons in this way is similar to buying things on sale or clearance with coupons.)

    • @Amanda, you can use a manufacture coupon with a store coupon. you just cant use two manufacture coupons on one item. if its a buy one get one free deal, and you have two identical coupons you can use both, because your getting two items, even if your not paying for it , it still works. good luck couponing !

  60. I went shoppin & used coupons that wer each $1 or more & it was double coupon up to .99 ! If not why? Example : would a $1 coupon be worth $1 or $1.99 ? If not, then why? Is this another ploy the stores play so you will shop at their store! Good news is I bought 8 items nearly $40 woth of merchandise & had $13.00 of coupons! Oh & they were mostly over the counter meds ! I bought bread dough & used a coupon on that too. I would have used the milk coupons but store shelves weren’t stocked for the brand that was named on the coupon!

    • @Paula Trombley, If it says “double coupons up to $0.99” that means all your coupons that are $0.99 or less will double in value. So, a $0.50 coupon will be worth $1! If your coupon is $1 or more, then it will just be accepted at face value and you will receive no additional discount.

      • I have also learnt that with doubling coupons if the item you are buying is $1.50 and you have a coupon for $1.00 (the store doubles up to $.99) the store will give you a credit for $.49.
I know my walmart will give you the money back too where Target will no honor any money the coupon goes over.

        • Double check policy on doublers. Walmart corporate has changed the way they handle them. The system won’t allow doubles to process if cost of item to be doubled is less than coupon amt plus dbld amt. Our Walmart doen’t give overages unless the item Not doubled is for example 1.97 and coupon is 2..then the .03 is applied to bill. The thing to remember is that the stores get reimbursed for the amt of coupon used so the extra 3cents can be applied to the rest of the bill. Not all stores can or are able to apply the overage to the rest of the bill.

          • To complete thought on last post….(rest of the bill)… the sentence was to be ……Not all stores can or are able to apply the overage to the rest of the bill when it concerns the doubled coupon amts.

  61. Hi! I’m new at couponing, Until now I have been using them ocasionally when I see a coupon for something I regularly buy. I have NEVER had anything doubled, I buy at Publix, Walmart, Target, I live in South Florida, Do you know if in those stores I have to ask them to double the coupon and it doesn’t happen automatically? Thanks for all the advise!

      • Please call your stores to verify if they actually Do double the coupons. If not once a week to verify policy call ten minutes b4 your scheduled trip to the specific store. I do not know about Walmarts east of the Missisippi but the northwest Walmarts DO in fact double if a competitor’s promo doubler is handed to the cashier. It does take a bit longer to process the doublers as their system is not set up to do so but it is well worth it. Last trip with doublers for me grossed 250 plus tax net paid was 63 with tax. Remember to be patience with your cashier.

        • Hey, I’m from NorCal too and I have the very same question about the same store. Safeway has a firm grip on grocery shopping in the Bay Area. And I’ve never noticed any announcements regarding the doubling of coupons. I know that we have Whole Foods but I’ve got an inborn policy against anything trendy and overpriced. Trader Joe’s is cool but they don’t carry many of the brands that I prefer on certain items. We used to have a Lucky grocery store but they closed down and now CVS occupies their space.

    • @Yuna, A lot of times, Target will say that they will take double…But the way that I have done it and understood it to be was that they will take one manufacturers coupon and one Target coupon. Ive done this twice now and they have always taken both. Im in Fort Lauderdale. Also, Publix will honor other stores coupons usually. You just need to go to their “star” cashier, works like a charm. Ive used Alberstons coupon & Kmart coupons at my local publix.

    • I live in Summerville, SC. My Walmart doubles every coupon every day up to $.99. There is no coupon limit. It must vary from store to store

      • I’m in Summerville too. What a coincidence =] The last time I went to walmart, the manager told me that doubling ended on Halloween, but some of the cashiers are still doing it anyway. Right now, its the luck of the draw.

    • Walmart doesn’t double for sure. I live in Mn and Cashwise Foods I knows double up to $1.00 – But I haven’t paid attention until. Just really started couponing. So we’ll see this weekend if they do it automatically at the register like they claim to on their website.

  63. I have ALWAYS wondered about this: “Even though some coupons say “do not double”, most will still automatically double at the register.” How in the world did you learn the 5 and 9 trick? Thank you so much for sharing this information with us!
